Robert Smith has revealed two songs that are likely to feature on The Cure’s forthcoming album.
Following their triumphant return in 2024 with Songs Of A Lost World, which was met with universal acclaim from fans, the band delivered a memorable performance at London’s Troxy venue, which was later immortalized on a live album.
Despite this success, it seems The Cure are not quite finished with this era just yet.
In a recent appearance on X-Posure with John Kennedy on Radio X, frontman Robert Smith hinted at the possibility of a second LP.
He shared that the new album would include songs that were previously played live but did not make it onto Songs Of A Lost World, as well as some entirely new material.
“It has a couple of songs that we were playing live which didn’t make it onto Songs Of A Lost World and it has some completely new stuff that no one’s ever heard,” Smith explained.
“There’s three songs on it, which are slower than pretty much anything on this album. So I don’t know, it may well end up being heavier than this one.”
Smith went on to elaborate on the tone of the new album, describing it as a departure from an upbeat vibe. “Lyrically, it’s a very long way from being an upbeat album,” he added.
“It has one song of grief on it which didn’t make it onto this album, which is a very, very old song which we’ve been playing for a long, long time called ‘It Can Never Be the Same’.
And I think that this next album will have that song on because I think it’s about time. It used to be called ‘Christmas Without You.’”
He further explained the personal nature of the song, revealing how its meaning has evolved over the years.
“When I first wrote it, it was about my mum dying, but it’s mutated over the years and that’s actually turned into a really powerful live song. That would probably make it on.”
Fans of The Cure can expect these deeply emotional and powerful tracks to play a significant role in the band’s next album, as they continue to explore new creative directions.
