James Taylor’s legendary music is set to hit the stage in a brand-new way.
The 77-year-old Grammy-winning singer-songwriter’s extensive discography will be featured in an upcoming musical currently titled Fire and Rain, named after his iconic 1970 song.
This original stage production is being crafted by Tracy Letts, the acclaimed playwright behind August: Osage County and a performer known for roles in Lady Bird and The Big Short. Tony Award winner David Cromer (The Band’s Visit) is set to direct.
A Musical in the Making
While additional details about Fire and Rain are yet to be revealed, anticipation is already building for the production.
James Taylor’s Rise to Fame
Taylor’s career took off after he impressed Paul McCartney and George Harrison of The Beatles with a performance in 1967. This pivotal moment led to Taylor becoming the first artist ever signed to the Beatles’ record label, Apple, at just 19 years old.
Since then, Taylor has won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. His most recent Grammy win came in 2021 for his album American Standard.

Among his most beloved hits are “Something in the Way She Moves” and “Fire and Rain,” which climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. He is also well-known for his renditions of “You’ve Got a Friend” and “How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved By You).”
A Reflection on Music and Art
In a 2020 interview, Taylor opened up about his journey into music, recalling that he first realized its potential as a career while receiving treatment for depression as a teenager. Over the years, his perspective on music and artistry has evolved.
“An artist is forced by their life circumstances to find a new way of dealing with a problem, and sometimes they blaze a trail that leads to a solution — one that other people can use. It’s hugely gratifying,” Taylor said.
“All I ever wanted to do was to play music and to have people enjoy it, occasionally use it in their lives, and make it part of their world. That’s a great feeling.”
More Music Stars Hitting the Stage
Taylor isn’t the only music legend bringing their work to Broadway. Dolly Parton is also preparing a stage project.
Her musical, Dolly, is set to premiere in Nashville on July 18, 2025, with performances running through August 17, 2025, before heading to Broadway in 2026. Tickets for the show are already on sale.
