Man accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston ruled mentally unfit for trial

A man accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston and crashing his car through the gate of her home has been found mentally unfit to stand trial, but he asked for a second opinion during a court hearing Thursday.

Jimmy Wayne Carwyle, 48, from Mississippi, appeared behind glass in a Hollywood courthouse that handles mental health cases. He had a long gray beard and wore a blue smock used to prevent suicide in jail.

A county-appointed psychiatrist said Carwyle was not competent to stand trial, Deputy Public Defender Robert Krauss told the judge. Krauss added that Carwyle wants another evaluation by a different psychiatrist, which is his right.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavaluzzi ordered the new evaluation and scheduled another hearing for May 29.

Neither Krauss, the prosecutor, nor an attorney representing Aniston commented after the hearing.

Prosecutors claim Carwyle had been sending Jennifer Aniston many voicemails, emails, and social media messages for two years before driving his Chrysler PT Cruiser through the gate of her Bel Air home on May 5, causing serious damage.

At his first court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to felony stalking and vandalism. The judge paused the case to allow for a mental health evaluation.

Carwyle is still in jail but has a court order not to contact or come near Aniston.

Officials said Aniston was home during the crash, but Carwyle did not come in contact with her. A security guard stopped him in the driveway until police arrived. No one was hurt.

Carwyle faces an added charge for threatening serious harm. If found guilty, he could get up to three years in prison. If he is declared mentally unfit again, the judge might send him to a state mental hospital for treatment and ongoing assessments.

Besides requesting protection for Aniston, prosecutors have not stated their opinion on Carwyle’s mental fitness and did not speak during the hearing.

Jennifer Aniston became a major TV star during her 10 years on NBC’s “Friends.” She won an Emmy Award for best lead actress in a comedy and was nominated nine more times. She now stars in “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.
