Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, has been elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and will be known as Pope Leo XIV. The announcement came from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where the crowds below eagerly chanted “Viva il Papa,” signaling the beginning of his papacy.
Prevost is the first American pope in history, although his strong ties to Latin America, particularly Peru, have led to his identification as a figure deeply connected to the region. Having spent significant time as a missionary and parish pastor in Peru, Prevost also holds Peruvian nationality.
Robert Prevost’s Early Life, Ministry, and Rise Through the Church Hierarchy
Born in 1955 in Chicago to Spanish and Franco-Italian parents, Prevost was raised in a devout Catholic family, with both of his parents actively involved in parish life. He was an altar boy and was ordained as a priest in 1982. Three years later, he moved to Peru, where he spent much of his career working with marginalized communities.
Prevost’s years as a pastor in Trujillo and as a seminary teacher played a pivotal role in shaping his views on social justice and pastoral care. His work in Peru earned him respect and admiration, particularly for his efforts to bridge gaps between communities.

Prevost’s ascent in the church hierarchy was marked by significant roles. In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him as the Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and he later became the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Latin America, an influential position that involved selecting and supervising bishops.
His work in this role brought him into close contact with many cardinals, contributing to his recognition within the Church. By January 2023, he was made Archbishop, and within a few months, Pope Francis elevated him to the cardinalate.
Pope Leo XIV’s Address Reflects Unity, Social Justice, and Commitment to Global Issues
In his first address as pope, Leo XIV spoke warmly of his predecessor, Pope Francis, expressing a sense of unity with the Church’s mission and calling for a collective advancement with God. As the first American pontiff, his background has generated significant interest, particularly regarding his views on social issues.
Known for his advocacy for migrants, the poor, and the environment, Leo XIV has often spoken about the need for concrete actions in these areas. He has also expressed support for Pope Francis’ positions on the inclusion of women in the Dicastery for Bishops, as well as the Church’s stance on same-sex blessings, though his approach is expected to be more cautious and locally nuanced.
The choice of the papal name Leo is seen as a clear signal of Pope Leo XIV’s focus on social justice issues. The name carries historical significance, with Pope Leo XIII, who served during the Industrial Revolution, being known for his social teachings, especially on workers’ rights. The new pope’s views on climate change reflect a similar concern for global issues, advocating for practical measures like the installation of solar panels and the use of electric vehicles at the Vatican.
Though his stance on LGBT issues remains somewhat unclear, it is believed that he may adopt a more conservative approach compared to Pope Francis, particularly in terms of doctrinal matters. Nevertheless, his commitment to addressing pressing social concerns, such as migration and environmental sustainability, will likely shape his papacy moving forward.
