Two of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza—the Indonesian Hospital and al-Awda Hospital—are now encircled by Israeli forces, according to staff and aid organizations. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent warning that the situation is pushing Gaza’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse. This military encirclement comes amid intensified Israeli operations aimed at dismantling Hamas and rescuing hostages held in the region.
Israeli Forces Intensify Operations While Gaza Hospitals Struggle Near Evacuation Zone
An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed a “new phase” of the war has begun, involving stronger and more expansive operations in northern Gaza. Troops from the 401st and Givati Brigades under the 162nd Division have been active in the area, destroying infrastructure and reportedly killing dozens of Hamas fighters. This escalation coincides with Israel’s broader strategy to pressure Hamas through increased military engagement and territorial control.

The two encircled hospitals, along with several other health centers, lie within or near the evacuation zone established by Israeli forces. Though not directly ordered to evacuate, the facilities are effectively incapacitated. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that ongoing military operations and evacuation orders are overwhelming the already fragile healthcare system, endangering the lives of both patients and medical personnel.
Israeli Strikes Damage Hospitals and Limited Humanitarian Aid Faces Delays and Restrictions
Israeli military activity around the Indonesian hospital has reportedly included drone surveillance, bulldozing of perimeter walls, and airstrikes that damaged its power supply. A staff member was killed, and many inside face shortages of essential resources. At al-Awda hospital, drones have allegedly targeted its courtyard and ambulances, severely restricting movement. Nearly 200 people, including patients, children, pregnant women, and staff, remain trapped and under threat.
Although Israel has started allowing limited humanitarian aid into Gaza following a lengthy blockade, the relief is minimal and slow-moving. A few dozen trucks carrying food and medicine have entered since Monday, but aid distribution is stalled due to Israeli military protocols. The United Nations continues to call for the safe transfer of patients and a broader humanitarian response to the worsening crisis.
