The American Gaming Association (AGA) forecasts that bettors in the U.S. will wager approximately $3.1 billion on both the men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments in 2025. This represents a noticeable increase from the previous year’s $2.7 billion. The AGA’s projection reflects the expanding U.S. sports betting market, which has seen significant growth following the legalization of sports betting in many states.
U.S. Sports Betting Growth Accelerates with Public Support and Legal Expansions Across States
The AGA attributes the expected increase in college basketball betting to the continued growth of the U.S. sports betting industry. Legal sports betting has rapidly expanded, with 38 states and Washington, D.C., now offering legal wagering options.
This growth was accelerated by the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, making betting more accessible and attractive to a broader audience. The AGA reports that as the market grows, more people are choosing to participate in legal sports betting.

The growth in the sports betting industry is also supported by strong public backing. According to the AGA’s 2024 American Attitudes Survey, 75% of Americans support legal sports betting in their home states. Additionally, a substantial 90% of Americans now view sports betting as a socially acceptable form of entertainment. This shift in public opinion has played a significant role in the expansion and normalization of sports wagering across the nation.
March Madness Drives Betting Growth While Promoting Responsible Gambling Practices and Awareness
March is a particularly critical month for basketball betting, especially with the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, commonly known as March Madness. This event has become one of the biggest and most anticipated sporting events in the U.S. The AGA notes that the legal expansion of sports betting allows more fans to legally and responsibly place wagers during the tournament, fueling even greater interest and participation in March Madness betting.
In addition to the growth in betting, the AGA emphasizes the importance of responsible gambling, particularly during March. The organization continues its “Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly.” campaign throughout the NCAA basketball tournaments to promote safer gambling practices.
The campaign encourages bettors to follow key principles, such as setting a budget, using legal platforms, and maintaining a level head regardless of the outcome. March also coincides with National Problem Gambling Month, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about responsible gaming practices and resources for those who may struggle with gambling issues.
