Trace Cyrus isn’t pleased with his father, Billy Ray Cyrus’ recent social media post addressing their family’s ongoing turmoil.
“Sunday callin. Giving thanks for the California Rain,” Billy Ray, 63, wrote via YouTube Shorts on Sunday, January 26. “Praying for the brokenhearted and their pain. Praying for my family.
For my children … sons and daughters … and their mother. Let this moment be the start of healing for us all. ‘The past does not equal the future.’ Amen.”
On Tuesday, January 28, Trace, 35, responded by quoting a Bible verse while sharing a screenshot of a news story about his father’s post on his Instagram Story.
“Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves,” he wrote, adding, “Judge a man by his actions. Not his words.”
The post was one of several statements Trace shared via Instagram Stories that day, defending his choice to speak publicly about his concerns regarding Billy Ray’s well-being.
“I’m very aware of the power of my voice. That’s why I usually stay silent,” he wrote. “I only speak publicly when instructed by Christ. I gave up my authority to him a while ago. I am merely a vessel for Christ to use as a messenger while I’m on this planet.”
Billy Ray Cyrus and His Kids: Where They Stand
In another post, Trace wrote, “Your thoughts create your reality,” and also shared a childhood photo of his younger sister Miley Cyrus sitting in a car with her hand on her head, captioning it, “Mood.”
The family drama escalated after Billy Ray’s performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration earlier this month, during which he experienced several technical issues. On January 22, Trace posted on Instagram that he could “barely recognize” his adoptive father anymore.

“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away. … We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy, Dad, & everyone is noticing it,” he wrote.

Trace continued: “We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and a half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing … I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly, but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help. You know how to reach me. Till that day comes, I will continue to pray for you.”
His younger brother Braison Cyrus later clarified via an Instagram Story on Friday, January 24, that Billy Ray was “healthy” following a weeklong hospital stay in the fall. (Braison, 30, also described producing Billy Ray’s upcoming album as a “full circle endeavor” in a statement to People.)
Billy Ray Cyrus’ Ex-Wife Firerose Reacts to Family Concerns
Less than a week later, Trace claimed that Billy Ray was threatening legal action over his initial Instagram post. “You should be ashamed of yourself. I will always love you but I no longer respect you as a man,” he wrote on Saturday, January 25. “Everyone close to you is terrified to tell you how they really feel. I’m not. Get help.”
Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi Cyrus after marrying Tish Cyrus in 1993. The couple went on to have three children together—Braison, Miley, and Noah—before finalizing their divorce in 2022. Billy Ray also has a son, Christopher Cyrus, from a previous relationship with Kristin Luckey.
Though Billy Ray has not directly addressed Trace’s remarks, he stood by his “praying for my family” post on Instagram on Tuesday. “All I want is healing for my family. I am so glad to see the message of love is uniting us,” he captioned a screenshot of an article covering his message. “It’s time to turn the page. #ThePastDoesNotEqualTheFuture.”
