Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, has provided a glimpse into his upcoming Britney Spears biopic, revealing that the pop icon herself will play an integral role in shaping the project.
Speaking following his Golden Globe win for Wicked in the category of cinematic and box-office achievement, Chu acknowledged that while much of the biopic remains in the early stages, Spears’ involvement is already a certainty.
“I haven’t really started anything fully yet,” Chu shared. “She will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach of things, but it’s very, very early.”
When asked about casting the role of Spears, Chu emphasized keeping an open mind. “I’ve seen all the fan casting,” he said.
“And I always take that into consideration because maybe there’s a good idea out there. We’ll have to see. We’ll have to see what the approach of the movie is because we know who is right for it, but I’m open for anything.”
In August, Deadline reported that Universal Pictures secured the film adaptation rights to Spears’ 2023 memoir, in which she candidly recounts the triumphs and challenges of her life in the spotlight and her upbringing.
Chu expressed his admiration for Spears in an interview with Billboard ahead of the Golden Globes.
“I’ve been a fan since I was young and she was young, and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium,” he said. “So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now, and it’s a long road ahead.”
Marc Platt, Chu’s producing partner on Wicked, will also serve as a producer for the Spears biopic.
Before turning his full attention to the biopic, Chu is focused on completing the Wicked sequel, Wicked: For Good. Filming for the sequel wrapped last year, and the movie, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is slated for release on November 21, 2025.
Following his Golden Globe win, Chu reflected on the significance of the Wicked films. “We love movies,” he said backstage.
“The movies that are timeless, that have been there our whole lives. And we wanted to make Wicked feel like it’s always been there on our shelf, but we never picked it up and watched it.”
Platt echoed Chu’s sentiments, emphasizing that their attention will remain on Wicked: For Good for the rest of 2025.
“When all is said and done, we’re going to get working on Wicked: For Good, which will take all of our attention, our heart, and our soul. We’re excited to bring that to you,” Platt stated.
Chu’s dedication to both projects underscores his ambition to honor both Spears’ legacy and the timeless appeal of Wicked. Fans will have to wait patiently as these eagerly anticipated films take shape.
